Unlike most small-form-factor PCs, the configurations use desktop parts instead of notebook components

Even though it isn't exactly the smallest personal computer ever seen, measuring 24 x 24 x 6.5cm, Dell still felt appropriate to dub its new product the world's first fully functional mini PC which has its PSU on the inside and Intel vPro technology. Dell's Optiplex 780 USFF mini desktop PC might not be the absolutely smallest rig out there, but its title does have bearing in the way that this product uses desktop PC parts, unlike other small-form-factor PCs which make use of components normally used in mobile computing platforms. The enterprise also updated its Optiplex 3 line, with the Dell OptiPlex 380 USFF set to replace the 360 systems.

The Optiplex 780 USFF is capable of running Microsoft Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP and even Ubuntu Linux (only available in certain countries) and is capable of scaling processing power, graphics and hard drives through the use of Intel Core 2 Duo processing technology. The storage capabilities are represented by a 2.5in form-factor 250GB HDD, 160GB fully encrypted HDD or 64GB SSD.

“Dell’s new OptiPlex 780 Ultra Small Form Factor (USFF) is the world’s smallest fully functional commercial desktop with integrated power supply and Intel vPro technology. This mainstream desktop PC is ideal for space constrained environments providing durable, ‘mount anywhere’ options and a simplifying all-in-one stand” said the release.

The product has a long lifecycle of 15 months and image stability, being part of Dell's Global Standard Platform program. This feature reduces the amount of needed productivity-reducing maintenance changes. In addition, the built-in Security and data protection options, such as full disk encryption and built-in Trusted Platform module, (TPM) safeguard corporate data and improve the business asset protection. The product comes with up to 90% efficient power supplies which are Energy Star 5.0, EPEAT Gold-compliant, making the Optiplex 780 USFF quite environment friendly. The system uses DDR3 memory clocked at 1066MHz.

As more specific details, the CPUs usable with the Q45 chipset are single- and dual-core Celeron, Pentium and Core 2 processors. Graphics capabilities are provided by an integrated GMA 4500 engine and the small case is still roomy enough to allow for the installation of an optical drive.

Dell introduced a second product, the Dell OptiPlex 380 USFF, which is set to replace the 360 systems. The 380 uses the G41 chipset, can also employ Core 2 Duo processors and DDR3 memory at 1066MHz, features remote system management with Dell Client Manager and its PSUs are up to 88% efficient.

“The death of the commercial desktop has been greatly overstated,” said Mike Basore, Senior Product Marketing Manager, Dell Business Client Product Group. “We are seeing customers look to deploy small form factor systems in ways never before imagined. These new desktop systems provide a rock solid foundation which Dell is known for while providing long-lifecycle and secure capabilities in key areas such as client virtualization and systems management.”

The press release may be read on Dell's official website and the customizable products are detailed and up for order online. The Dell Optiplex 780 USFF has a starting price of £479/€569, with the 380 at £369/€419. Prices will vary according to the selected system configurations.
