Dell's 3rd quarter financial results are better than expected

It's not easy to make assumptions regarding the future of a large company such as Dell. Maybe it's not the brightest idea since there is little that you can actually find out about what's happening inside. But someone's got to do it, right?

Dell is not finishing the year in a very good position. But it seems that, although many have predicted a bad year for them, especially with the SEC investigations and herrings, Dell managed to stay alive. They've just finished publishing the results for the 3rd quarter and it seems that they have made some money along the year.

According to Reuters, for the quarter ended November 3, Dell made a profit $677 million on revenue of $14.4 billion. Compare that with $606 million earnings in the same quarter last year and you'll see that they are not doing so bad. Sales of the company's "mobility products," including notebooks actually grew 17 per cent and registered a drop in desktop PC sales of five per cent. So it seems that the laptop line does great while the new AMD powered desktops are not going so good after all.

Remember that these numbers may not be the actual results since the official ones coming from Securities and Exchange Commission probe have not come out yet. Dell says SEC investigation will not affect earnings, but that remains to be seen when the final 4th quarter results come out.
