Much ado about nothing

A few days ago I was questioning myself in a post whether Dell was serious about the Linux hardware support it said to offer when announcing the launch of the pre-installed Ubunutu systems. I must admit now, I've made a mistake and rushed with the, even questioning, conclusions. I've been a bit influenced by some friends of mine who were not exactly very fond of Dell and I did not check whether a possible drop in the extended support was official stuff. This "news" was also circulating on the famous digg.com news channel.

There was Dell's website again, but the extended hardware support was not to be found anymore. However, Dell made things clear and gave the reason why the extended support hasn't been visible on the website. According to a Dell spokesperson:

"Due to an ordering system glitch during the weekend, we inadvertently removed extended warranty and CompleteCare options from our 'configurator.' We're working to get the issue resolved as quickly as possible and those options will be reinstated this afternoon. If customers ordered systems when extended warranties weren't available, they will have the option of upgrading at the original price. There will be more details on that program soon."

Dell will be releasing details soon on how to add extended hardware support to customers who purchased Ubuntu Linux systems when those options were not available. After all, it proves out that Dell is indeed a serious company, which pays attention to the commitments it makes. It is also a Linux-friendly company, and likes to get involved in different actions regarding the development and support of the Linux operating system.
