Microsoft regards virtualization as a stepping stone to private and public Clouds, and it should not be a surprise that the company is invested in driving adoption as much as possible.

Part of the Redmond company’s strategy is to provide cost cuts as well as streamline IT operations, ensure reliability, boot efficiency etc., for virtualization adopters.

One way to drive virtualization uptake is through providing bundles of hardware and software as unified offerings, rather than disparate solutions.

It’s the case of Dell Business-Ready Configurations for Hyper-V R2, born out of a partnership between Microsoft and Dell.

“Our customers have told us they need simplified management and virtualization solutions that work well together,” revealed Amy Barzdukas, general manager, Server and Tools Marketing at Microsoft.

“The expanded partnership between Microsoft and Dell will help deliver those solutions to empower customers to embrace virtualization today and begin their journey to private cloud.”

What customers get through the new virtualization product is a combination of technologies, including Dell PowerEdge R610 and R710 rack servers; Dell EqualLogic PS6010XV 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) Internet SCSI (iSCSI) storage arrays; Dell PowerConnect 8024F 10 GbE switches as well as Windows Server 2008 Release 2 (R2) Hyper-V and even System Center.

Essentially, with Dell Business-Ready Configurations for Hyper-V R2, the duo is providing not only hardware but also storage and virtualization management technologies.

The promise from Microsoft’s Ed Anderson is that scaling up virtualization instances would not end up increasing costs, and that the focus on streamlining management will simplify IT.

“These jointly engineered solutions will make virtualization more cost effective and accessible, integrate management across the stack, and set you on the path to private cloud – but you don’t have to wait to get started,” Anderson added.

“Dell’s Business Ready Configuration, based on Microsoft’s Hyper-V Cloud Fast Track reference architecture, is available today and can help you start realizing the benefits of virtualization and begin your journey to private cloud.”
