Just a week after the one year anniversary of Exchange Server 2010, Microsoft has made available for download multiple Update Rollups for its latest two versions of the business email product. No less than four update packages went live on both the Microsoft Download Center and Microsoft Update.

The refreshes are designed to update releases of Exchange Server 2010 and Exchange Server 2007.

Essentially, customers will be able to download and deploy Update Rollup 2 for Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 1, Update Rollup 2 for Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 3, Update Rollup 5 for Exchange Server 2010 RTM and Update Rollup 5 for Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 2.

There are some notes from the software giant that Exchange customers need to be aware of.

With the release of Exchange Server 2010 SP1, the Redmond company introduced Arabic and Hebrew language version.

However, RU1 has not been created with these two new languages in mind. In this regard, the advice from Microsoft is that customers simply grab the English language version of the rollup, since it brings to the table all of the same fixes.

Kevin Bellinger, a Senior Program Manager within the Exchange Customer Experience (CXP) team explained that it’s critical for Forefront users to disable the security solution prior to deploying the updates.

This can be done through the fscutility /disable command. Of course, Forefront can be turned back on once the deployment of the update rollups is completed via fscutility /enable.

Bellinger also provided details about what each of the update rollups offers customers:

Update Rollup 2 for Exchange Server 2010 SP1

This update contains a number of customer reported and internally found issues since the release of RU1. Update Rollup 3 for Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 1 is currently scheduled to release in February.

Update Rollup 2 for Exchange Server 2007 SP3 This update contains a number of customer reported and internally found issues since the release of RU1. Update Rollup 3 for Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 3 is currently scheduled to release in February.

Update Rollup 5 for Exchange Server 2010 RTM

This update contains an internally found issue which can impact upgrades from RTM RU4 to Service Pack 1. We have opted to release an out-of-band update rollup for Exchange 2010 RTM proactively to ensure customers have as smooth an upgrade experience as possible.

Currently, we have no plans to release future update rollups for Exchange Server 2010 RTM. We strongly recommend customers upgrade to Service Pack 1 with the latest Update Rollup after installing this update.

Update Rollup 5 for Exchange Server 2007 SP2

This security update was released earlier this morning via the Microsoft Security Response Center. Currently, we have no plans to release future update rollups for Exchange Server 2007 SP2. Instead, we strongly recommend customers upgrade to Service Pack 3 with the latest Update Rollup.”
