Debra Messing is in the greatest shape of her life and it’s not just because she lost 20 pounds (9.07 kg) without even trying: she’s also vibrating with energy and has never felt more upbeat and stronger. She credits the change to a diet overhaul, with the weight loss being just a bonus she didn’t even expect.

Speaking with ABC News, the 45-year-old actress explains that, about 3 years ago, she was feeling as if she’d reached the end of her rope. She was tired and fussy and often sick, and she was also a bit heavier. However, she insists, she didn’t change her diet because she wanted to lose weight: she just wanted to get healthier.

Messing has been dealing with allergies for her entire life, so she decided to change the way she approached nutrition to see how that would impact her health. The result was absolutely spectacular, with the weight loss coming as a “side effect.”

Always a self-professed lover of food, especially of the unhealthy kind (junk food and sweets), Debra progressively ditched them, as she incorporated more fruits and veggies into her daily routine. Today, she starts the day with a green juice, which allows her to get all the nutrients in a glass while providing her with energy to go through the day.

“I think it made a big difference in how I look or at least how I’m perceived to look. I lost like 20 pounds, it wasn’t my intention, that wasn’t why I made the change. I made the change because I was just tired all the time. For a long time, I just accepted that was the plight of a working, single mother. You’re juggling everyday…,” she says.

Once she said goodbye to her favorite foods like burgers with fries, pizza and candy, and she welcomed vegetables into her life, she started feeling like a new woman. Today, she never goes without spinach, or kale or fruits for a day.

“I’m just eating really, really clean healthy foods. Obviously I knew there was an association between what I ate and whether I gained 10 pounds or lost 10 pounds [4.5 kg], but it never really became a reality for me that it shows on the outside in your hair and skin and even the clarity of your eyes. I was just stubborn,” she explains.

So, if you need a change in your life and your figure, here’s one celebrity that’s not endorsing a diet but a common-sense, simple way of eating. Moreover, if you don’t feel like cutting out certain treats completely, you can start by eating them less often. That too will make a difference.
