The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a new warning in regards to a new, SARS-like virus that has already infected 14 people, 8 of whom were killed. Travelers in or near the Arabian Peninsula should take extra caution when abroad.

The CDC notes that the situation is none that would require a change of traveling plans; however, those visiting countries where the novel coronavirus has been found should immediately visit a doctor if they notice SARS-like symptoms.

“From April 2012 to February 2013, a total of 14 people in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan, and the United Kingdom (UK) were confirmed to have respiratory illness caused by a novel (new) coronavirus; 13 cases were severe and one case was mild. Eight of these 14 people died,” the CDC says.

Three of them were in the UK, and only one had been abroad, passing the virus to family members upon his return home.

Should travelers notice symptoms like fever of lower respiratory problems within 10 days or less of their travels, they should see a physician immediately.

“CDC does not recommend that anyone change their travel plans because of these cases of the novel coronavirus. CDC recommends that US travelers to countries in or near the Arabian Peninsula monitor their health and see a doctor right away if they develop fever and symptoms of lower respiratory illness, such as cough or shortness of breath. They should tell the doctor about their recent travel,” the CDC underlines.
