Capcom announced that Dead Rising 2 and Dead Rising 2: Off the Record are making the jump from Games for Windows Live to Steamworks today.

Dead Rising 2 came out back in 2010, the second installment in the popular open-world survival horror beat'em up series published by Capcom. Off the Record is a reinterpretation of the game, only starring original Dead Rising protagonist Frank West and a whole different narrative.

The company noted that people who purchased a retail version of Dead Rising 2 or Off the Road can simply use the GFWL activation code in order to redeem the product on Steam.

The bad news is that those who purchased the game directly from the Games for Windows Live marketplace will not be able to make the transition.

Some good news, some bad news

The post on the Capcom Unity blog points out that the Steamworks edition of the game will come with all the expected perks of the platforms, including matchmaking, achievements, leaderboards, cloud save support, and trading cards.

Unfortunately, LDC content will not make it over to Steamworks, due to the lack of an activation key. Those who still like to play the game with their DLC will be able to continue to do so with the GFWL version of the installation, using the GFWL service.

Furthermore, the GFWL save data and achievement migration tool will become available shortly, but not in time for today's Steamworks launch.

Players will be able to use the tool to transfer their progress from GFWL to Steam, by installing and signing into the GFWL client, since the game needs to authenticate the records on the GFWL service.

Those who don't care about that can start the game from scratch, skipping the GFWL installation. Capcom also pointed out and assured everyone that Dead Rising 2 and Dead Rising 2: Off the Record will remain playable with all the features and functionality of the GFWL platform.
