Since last year's Triple Crown, 35 horses have died while training or racing at Belmont Park. James Cromwell hopes that organizers of the Belmont Stakes will agree to commemorate these animals by printing their names in the June 8 racing program.

“I ask that you consider paying respect to the horses who have died on the Belmont Park track in the last 12 months by printing their names on a species memorial tribute page in the June 8 racing program,” reads a letter sent by the actor to the Belmont Stakes organizers.

“It would be a small gesture and would cost you little, but it would honor those who paid the highest possible price for your industry,” James Cromwell goes on to say.

Both the actor and green-oriented group PETA would much rather have horse races put an end to altogether.

But then again, lots of people appear to enjoy this form of entertainment, so odds are James Cromwell and PETA will have to settle for seeing the horses commemorated for the time being.
