THQ has announced at Gamescom 2010 the second stand-alone expansion to Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II, called Retribution. It will ship in February 2011. This will be the last expansion for the game, as Relic will be moving on to work on Dawn of War III, which will be released 18 to 24 months after Retribution.

Dawn of War II: Retribution takes place ten years after the recent stand-alone expansion Chaos Rising and finally allows players to choose whatever race from the Warhammer 40,000 universe they want to use in the single player portion of the game.

THQ has only revealed the Orks until now, but the developer promises that all story arcs will be interesting, epic and will tie-up the plot from the last two installment very well.

Retribution will be adding a number of units to the multiplayer component, as well as maps and a new faction.

Jeff Lydell, producer of the game said that, “We all love the Blood Ravens here at Relic Entertainment, but there are also a lot of fans of the other races and armies out there so we decided that Retribution should allow the player the freedom to experience the campaign from the perspective they select.”

Speaking to Eurogamer at Gamescom 2010 in Köln, Danny Bilson, the vice president of THQ core games brought another set of good news for Dawn of War fans everywhere.

“Retribution's going to ship in February, and then we start laying out Dawn of War III,” Bilson said. “You can probably expect it between 18 months and two years after that.” This means that the real time strategy is expected to com out between August 2012 and February 2013.

While nothing is set in stone about the game, THQ is planning to implement the business model behind Company of Heroes Online, if it woks out in the West.

“It all depends on how Company of Heroes Online does, and how it works and how people respond to it,” said Bilson. “If they do that would definitely drive us to… ”

He also gave some details about what Relic has in mind for the third main installment in the Dawn of War series. “Now Dawn of War III, either way, is going to have a much larger strategic component to it, more of a global battle going on with little tactical things, sort of MMO-like…

“We haven't announced anything about it, and it's still in its early formative stage, but I'm just talking to you about the brainstorming going on around it.”
