Apparently, he wanted to keep Twisted Metal a genuine surprise

David Jaffe, the creator of Twisted Metal and God of War, explained why he kept denying the fact that he was working on a PlayStation 3 version of Twisted Metal, in spite of all the rumors that were surfacing. The most recent one had come from analyst Michael Pachter, who spilled the beans on the existence of the game during an interview. Jaffe still said that Pachter was not right about it and, later, Pachter admitted that he was only speculating.

As it seems, Pachter was not entirely speculating, but almost ruined Sony's best kept secret, as Twisted Metal for the PlayStation 3 was announced by David Jaffe on the stage of the company's press conference at E3 2010. The developer explained for Joystiq why he chose not to tell the truth about what his company was developing in the months leading up to E3.

Speaking about the E3 conventions in the past, Jaffe said that, “[...] They used to be about surprises. And it used to be you'd come and you didn't know what you were going to find on the show floor and that was a big part of the fun and you walk from booth to booth and you just discover stuff. And the last, I don’t know, four or five years everything gets either announced or leaked before […].”

He continued to add that, “Sony called about four months ago and said, ‘Let’s make Twisted a surprise and let’s close the show with it. I was like, ‘Yeah! Let’s do that.’ But it kind of necessitated being kind of sneaky about it. To me giving fans an actual genuine E3 surprise was more valuable to me than sort of being totally honest when people ask me questions.”

And so they did. Twisted Metal is a kind of a reboot, according to the developer. The dark humor and competitive multiplayer will return, and Eat Sleep Play, Jaffe's studio, promises that there will be a lot of improvements and innovations in the game. No 3D or PlayStation Move support will be added, though, as the developers felt that it would not fit with the title's nature.
