As celebrity gossip goes, it’s been months that rumor started to circulate that “Bones” star David Boreanaz was unfaithful to his wife of almost a decade. The actor never addressed them in any way, but that changes in the latest issue of People magazine, where he admits having cheated on his wife. They are not seeking divorce though and are determined to try and work out their marital problems.

The admission of guilt came as a total shock, especially since, even with the above-mentioned rumors, few actually believed Boreanaz to be the cheating type. In his statement to People, the actor stresses he’s coming out now because he wants to set the record straight – and prevent the woman he had the affair from selling her story to the tabloids, as it usually happens with stars. Divorce is not an issue right now, David explains, adding that he and Jaime Bergman are working hard to salvage their marriage.

“Our marriage has been tainted with my infidelities,” David tells People in the statement. “I just want to be open and honest. I was irresponsible. I was associated with a woman who I was involved with and had a relationship with. She asked for money. I felt as though I was being blackmailed or there was some sort of extortion. We’re working on our marriage. We’re working on repairing what has been damaged so badly,” the actor adds.

TMZ verified his statement and it seems to be accurate: he did come out with the statement because the mistress threatened to blackmail him. Apparently, the affair was brief but Boreanaz somehow ended up paying the woman large sums of money to keep her quiet. She then contacted celebrity attorney Gloria Allred, who, in her turn, called David’s attorney, asking for a 6-figure check to keep quiet. In response, the actor issued the statement to People and refused to pay her another dime.

“We’re told Boreanaz had a short-term relationship with the woman – one source says they hooked up ‘2 or 3 times.’ Sources say he started paying her money – several thousand dollars here and there – but she began demanding more, threatening to go public with the affair. Boreanaz then confessed the affair to Jaime Bergman, his wife of 9 years. Enter Gloria Allred, who reps the mistress. Allred contacted Boreanaz’s lawyer – legal pit bull Marty Singer – and demanded 6 figures. Boreanaz then blunted the attack by going public with his affair. He has refused to pay the mistress another cent,” TMZ writes.
