New “Suicide Squad” mirror famous cover of Batman villain

The other day, director David Ayer posted the first photo of the assembled cast of the upcoming “Suicide Squad,” snapped on the occasion of the first read-through. Jared Leto, who will be playing The Joker, was notably absent from it.

So if you were wondering #WhereIsJared, wonder no more: some hours ago, Ayer posted the first photo of the Oscar winner in character. You can find it below. If you’re familiar with Batman comics, you’re probably giggling already at the subtle nod to one of the most famous covers with this villain.

If you’re not, I’ll explain: the photo attached to this post is of the critically acclaimed graphic novel “Batman: The Killing Joke,” considered one of the best stories with the villain. In it, The Joker is a failed comedian who goes crazy after Batman defeats and disfigures him.

In Ayer’s photo, Jared’s face is half-hidden behind the camera and the rest of the shot is too blurry to be able to tell details about his appearance. Still, we can see clearly that his eyebrows are shaved and that he’s rocking The Joker’s infamous green hair: some weeks ago, the actor cut his long hair and dyed it platinum blonde, so getting it green was the next logical step.

It could be that the association of the two photos is a hint from Ayer to fans as to what to expect from The Joker in this film.

“Suicide Squad” will start shooting soon and is scheduled for theatrical release in August 2016.
