Wrestling star Dave Bautista is adding another notch on his acting belt: he’s just been cast as Drax the Destroyer in Marvel’s upcoming blockbuster “Guardians of the Galaxy.”

Bautista, which already has acting credits on “The Scorpion King 3,” “The Man with the Iron Fists” and the upcoming “Riddick,” came to replace Marvel’s initial choice for the role, Jason Momoa.

Momoa was frontrunner from the start but, according to reports online, he would not do the part on Marvel’s terms, so the studio simply moved on to the next choice. Which is probably for the best in the end, if you think about it.

“Drax is a human resurrected as a green warrior with the sole purpose of killing Thanos (the villain in the final-scene tease of Avengers). His powers include flight, super-strength and energy blasts,” The Hollywood Reporter says of Bautista’s role.

“Guardians of the Galaxy” is scheduled for theatrical release on August 1, 2014.
