Religious groups might object

Darwin would really be proud his followers. The National Academies, an independent organization that provides guidance on scientific, medical and engineering questions to the federal government and other groups, has set up a web page, in order to fight all attempts to portray the evolutionist theory as mere speculation on the development of life on Earth.

This initiative comes as a result of the opposition of some US religious groups, which consider that this scientific view of life should be taught in schools only if their own views of a divine creator get equal credence.

On this web page, www.nationalacademies.org/evolution, the visitor can find links to various reports on evolution, different statements on this subject, but also a large variety of links towards outside resources.

"The theory of evolution is one of science's most robust theories, and the National Academies have long supported the position that evolution be taught as a central element in any science education program. Over the past several years, however, there has been a growing movement around the country to include non-scientifically based 'alternatives' in science courses. Currently there are challenges to the teaching of evolution in some 40 states or local school districts" the Academies said in a statement.

Thus, we can see now that a very old battle, between the supporters of Darwin and the official religious belief, has moved from the conference halls, churches and so on, into the public arena represented by the Internet.
