Namco Bandai has confirmed quite a few new things in regard to Dark Souls, the most important of them being the fact that the upcoming Prepare to Die Edition will also be sold through Steam, after fans had petitioned the company to drop the clunky Games for Windows Live service.

Dark Souls impressed lots of PS3 and Xbox 360 owners last year thanks to its challenging nature and the top-notch, old-school RPG mechanics.

After many petitions, Namco Bandai and developer From Software confirmed that a special Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition would be released on the PC and that it was going to support the Games For Windows Live online service.

This didn’t impress fans, as many loathed the clunky service and started asking the two companies to consider Steam as a replacement.

Now, it’s been confirmed that Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition will be released digitally through Steam, while retail copies will still support GfWL.

What’s more, Namco Bandai also confirmed that the special version would include an expansion called Artorias of the Abyss, which would appear for the console versions of Dark Souls this winter.

“Dark Souls: Artorias of the Abyss for consoles and Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition will include sprawling new maps and environments; new boss characters, enemies and non-playable characters; an arsenal of new weapons and armor; and additional challenging content for stalwart heroes to face as they return to the deadly world of Lordran,” the company said.

“Players will also experience an as yet untold chapter in Dark Souls lore set in the dying kingdom of magic known as Oolacile. Unwillingly taken by the abyss and sent back in time, the player becomes the only one who can save Oolacile from the spreading darkness that threatens to engulf the kingdom and all of its people.”

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition is out for PC on August 24 and will also appear on the PS3 and Xbox 360 in winter. Existing owners on consoles can just get the Artorias of the Abyss DLC separately.
