A new Dark Souls II developer diary is out, offering additional information on the game's storyline and on the various factors influencing design decisions.

Dark Souls 2 is an upcoming action role-playing game where players will take control of a cursed character trying to find a cure, and in the process stumbling upon an even greater curse.

The game is set in an open-world environment, and although it is set in the same world as its predecessor, the two games' storylines will not be directly linked.

The developers state that the biggest concern was properly carrying over as many concepts and elements of the Dark Souls franchise as possible.

"In Dark Souls, the sense of accomplishment in overcoming difficulties is the is the most important aspect of the game," one of the devs shares.

The sense of loose connection with other players is another unique aspect of the game that allows players to share the joy or difficulty of the gaming experience.

The most important aspect of Dark Souls II is exploration. Exploring their surroundings and their back story is something that players will focus on, and understanding why they are in a certain place where something significant has occurred will allow them to feel a deeper emotional connection and be more involved in the game.

While the team usually comes up with the general concept of the game and only then proceeds to figure out the specifics of how players will fit in, this time around things were exactly the opposite, starting with a powerful enthralling story and then having to figure out how to build the game experience around it.

Through the process of creating Dark Souls 2, I realized the true meaning of Dark Souls 1. There were a lot of discoveries. I think they exemplified how profound this game is," Video Game Director Hidetaka Miyazaki concluded.

From Software's DarkSouls II is scheduled to come out on March 11 in North America, March 13 in Japan and March 14 in Europe, for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC platforms.
