“28 Days Later” came out in 2003, and was followed by “28 Weeks Later” in 2007. Oscar-winning director is to return to the helm of the franchise he helped set up, with a third film tentatively called “28 Months Later.”

Even for those who are not necessarily horror movie fans, “28 Days Later” was a film that ranked high on their favorites list because of the brilliant acting, a good story and excellent directing.

It was Boyle who helmed the first film, stepping down for “28 Weeks” in favor of Juan Carlos Fresnadillo but retaining producing duties.

Since then, as ScreenCrave also points out, speculation about whether Boyle would ever return to the franchise has been running rampant with its fans.

As it turns out, not only will a third film be made, but it will also feature Boyle as the director – if he gets to have it his way, that is.

“Boyle stated, ‘there’s another 28 Days Later in the works.’ When asked if the title would be 28 Months Later, Boyle replied ‘In theory, yes’,” Dread Central writes, as per the aforementioned e-zine.

“Immediately the next question was if he’d be producing, to which Boyle responded, ‘Actually I want to direct it.’ There you have it, kids. From the horse’s mouth,” the report further says.

However, while this may sound like excellent news – and it certainly is if it weren’t for the following detail – other reports say a third film may not happen because of some unresolved copyright issues.

“About a month ago, ‘28 Days Later’ writer Alex Garland told us that the new movie has to overcome rights issues before moving forward,” Worst Previews says.

“The rights were frozen between a group of people who are no longer talking to each other. And so, the film is never going to happen unless those people start talking to each other again,” Garland said.

He also mentioned that there was no script in place for a third film, assuming said differences had been resolved and the people in question had started talking to each other again.

“If Boyle is now attaching himself to direct, that could mean that the two parties have come to an agreement. But even if that has happened (which I doubt), it will be a while before we see ‘28 Months Later’ in theaters,” Worst Previews says.

For updates on this, make sure you keep an eye on this space. For those not familiar with the highly successful and critically acclaimed franchise, below is the trailer for “28 Weeks Later.” Enjoy.
