DVD+RW alliance announces

The next step for DVD+RW is a burning speed of 8x in double-layer.

The announcement was made by the authority in the matter, DVD+RW Alliance.

Thus, it's estimated that the compatible drives plus support will become available in the next few months.

DVD+R DL version 0.9 was recently finalized and sent to the production license owners. The DVD+RW Alliance leaders estimate that the 1.0 version will be completed by the end of April, and the first DVD+R DL 8x will be available on the market beginning of July.

The Taiwanese producers are the incontestable leaders of the writable optic media market, while the Japanese rewritable solutions are the most appreciated.

Outside the Asian area, Philips is one of the main suppliers of DVD+RW solutions.

Several Taiwanese top producers, such as AOpen, BenQ, Lite-On IT and Ritek announced their support for DVD+RW. The global distribution of DVD+RW compatible drive systems hit 55 million units last year, and all the newly produced rewritable drives are DVD+R/RW compatible.

The estimates for this year announce a considerable increase, up to 85 million PCs equipped with DVD-RW compatible drives, and the ascending trend will continue until 2007, when the number of systems is estimated to 120 million.
