$30 for a DVD Burner, anyone?

In order to counter the pressure coming from TSST (Toshiba Samsung Storage Technology) and Hitachi-LG Data Storage (HLDS) Taiwanese manufacturer Lite-On decided to drop the prices for its half-height (HH) DVD Writer units. Prices will drop below $30 making the Allwrite series from Lite-On look even more affordable to the home user.

Of course, the fact that Lite-On is actually lowering prices comes at a moment when TSST group already announced that their DVD units will be sold for approximately $25. And this can only complicate things.

As for the user, one can enjoy this move, especially someone who doesn't own a unit capable of burning DVDs. The shipments of DVD burner units came close to 60% of the total ODDs (Optical Disk Drives) this year and it may go as high as 80% in 2007 due to prices being constantly reduced.

Once again, it's up to you. I'd say that if you plan to buy a DVD writer unit, go for the cheapest, but make sure it can do good quality writings. And remember the fact that Lite-On drives come with K-Probe software since it will only run on Lite-On drives. Maniacs who want to accurately check the number of errors on a disk and the writing quality should be pleased.
