DROID X by Motorola, one of the latest mobile phones the company brought to the market with Google's Android operating system, is already running under the latest official version of the platform, though it seems that an even newer flavor of the OS was made available for download for the handset.

We're referring here to the Android 2.2.1 version of the operating system, which reportedly leaked into the wild, and which can be downloaded and installed on DROID X handsets out there, provided that they have already rooted them.

In case there are some interested in installing the new software update on their smartphones, they would have to root the devices first, a pretty simple task at the moment.

There are various solutions that enable users to easily root their Android devices, including one-click rooting solutions, such as z4root from developer RyanZA.

We should note that rooting a device would instantly void warranty. Users are advised to not root their handsets, for not all things might go as expected at all times.

However, those who would still go for the rooting, and who would also like to have the leaked Android 2.2.1 OS version installed on their DROID X phones, will find the file available for download via various websites around, a recent article on droid-life states.

The installation process is expected to leave all data on the mobile phone intact, though performing a backup before launching the process is always a good idea.

After downloading the file, users would have to put it on a microSD card. They also need Koush’s Droid X Bootstrap. All the necessary info on the installation process for this leaked software for DROID X can be found on this thread on mydroidworld.

“This update requires you to format your system, mount your system, then run an update zip. Please familiarize yourself with these functions inside of the Clockwork Recovery before attempting this install,” forum user p3droid notes.

Those who will try to root their DROID X devices and to install the leaked OS flavor will do so at their own risk.
