Spot prices for memory chips still have room to increase

It was just the other day that DRAM suppliers got accused of artificially fixing prices, and yet there seems to have been no change in current trends.

That is to say, random access memory chips are still going up in terms of average selling prices.

Naturally, this is something that manufacturers are delighted about, even though customers feel they are being cheated.

According to a new report, mainstream DDR3 2 GB chips are now at over $1.7 / 1.31 Euro. A big rise compared to the $1.08 / 0.83 of February 2013 (last month).

Mobile DRAM chips are gaining importance, as usual, while PC DRAM chip inventories have been reduced, not unlike stockpiles of semiconductors in general.

Samsung and SK Hynix are the main driving forces behind the shift in focus from PC to mobile.
