One of the most eagerly awaited features of the multiplayer side of Battlefield 4 is the Commander Mode and the team at developer DICE is ready to offer more details on the options that it offers and the demands it places on gamers.

Valerian Noghin, a multiplayer designer, writes on an official blog that players will have to be very focused on the Commander Mode in order to be efficient and that’s why the company has decided not to allow switching between it and first-person gameplay.

He states, “We wanted to ensure the Commander is dedicated to supporting the whole team, not just themselves. We all remembered the BF2 Commander supporting himself while in a tank ignoring his team worst case scenario, and that’s something we wanted to avoid happening again.”

Commanders will be able to see the action of all their teammates and the overall tactical situations and they have a number of very powerful tools, including cruise missiles, to use in order to help their team on the offensive or crush an enemy move.

The arsenal that DICE is including in Battlefield 4 includes UAVs that offer more information about the battle space, with EMP available to jam enemy forces and a warning ready to use when a missile is launched.

Commanders can also designate players as High Value Targets.

Noghin adds, “The attackers will receive additional bonuses when taking out said target, while the target will receive bonuses when performing kills while being HVT – thus both parties have something to gain from this.”

It seems that the entire system was inspired by the wanted mechanic from GTA.

DICE is also using the blog entry to offer more information on the history of the Commander mode.

Battlefield 4 will be launched on October 29 in the United States and November 1 in Europe on the PC and current gen consoles.

Versions for the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 are also being created.
