Video game developer DICE says that the single-player campaign in Battlefield 4 has been a learning experience for the team and has a great story to tell, which is why the company is promoting it as much as the multiplayer modes.

Lars Gustavsson, the creative director of the studio, tells CVG that, “As a team and a studio we’ve learned so much from crossbreeding between single player and multiplayer. The whole concept of Levolution in many ways comes from single player, and our exploring how we could bring drama and interaction to the world.”

Traditionally, the Battlefield series is seen as a multiplayer-focused experience and most long-term fans have not appreciated the single-player component that was included in the previous title in the franchise.

Apparently, the biggest complaint was that the structure should have been more open in order to give players an experience closer to multiplayer.

Lars Gustavsson adds, “What we promised ourselves was to unify the product more, so we infused a lot of the things from multiplayer – from being able to use your squad – into multiplayer, so now you can use them in single player to engage enemies.”

The combat in the single player of Battlefield 4 will be more open, giving players choices on how they want to approach them.

DICE has also promised that the story it will tell will be emotion driven and will deal with the effect the war can have on those who need to carry out the most difficult missions.

The long-term success of the first-person shooter, like that of its rival Call of Duty: Ghosts, depends on how the community will react to the changes made to the multiplayer modes.

Battlefield 4 will be out on October 29 in the United States and three days later in Europe, on the PC and current-gen consoles.
