Networking is going green too

D-Link announced the launch of a new range of end-to-end networking products that are aimed at being more environmentally friendly while providing a high quality of service. The D-Link's Green Ethernet desktop switches are intended to be used by home users and small businesses and offices and they offer important energy savings that can reach 44 percent of the power footprint of a Gigabit switch that has five ports.

The Green Ethernet solutions from D-Link were carefully designed and manufactured in order to achieve high levels of energy savings without any performance penalty or reduced functionality. These new D-Link Green Ethernet switches are able to tell when the computer systems that they are serving are powered down and no network traffic is going through in order to enter a low power stand-by mode that allows them to save up to 44 percent of the power needed by every switch.

As most computer users that are employing D-Link made switches are using them into a home or small office environment, the Green Ethernet range of products are able to measure exactly the length of the cable used between the switch and the host computer system in order to adjust the power levels needed for different cables. Most commercially available solutions are not capable of these feats and they are always using the maximum power level allowed, just for the case that the total length of the cable is approaching the maximum of 100 meters.

''D-Link's Green Ethernet solutions are important, for the environment and for our customers.'', said Osbert Ong, D-Link's European Product Manager: ''D-Link recognises the significant market demand for energy efficient networking products and is leading the initiative in making Green Ethernet a reality for the home and SME user. At the same time, larger businesses need to consider their environmental responsibilities. Adopting D-Link's Green Ethernet solutions will enable them to reduce their carbon footprint, and ensure that D-Link secures a technological and environmental head-start with this market.''

The very first networking products from D-Link that are coming under the Green Ethernet designation will start shipping in the United Kingdom in the fourth quarter of the year and in the first phase these products will be available only for small offices and homes, which means under 24-ports range. According to the manufacturing company, the rest of its range of products, especially the managed switches, will be upgraded with these power saving features in 2008.
