Computer security experts of the US Navy have performed some penetration tests on the networks of USS Freedom, the Navy’s first littoral combat ship, to see just how vulnerable the warship’s systems are to cyberattacks.

According to an unnamed Navy official cited by Reuters, some vulnerabilities have been identified, but they’re not so critical. This means that the eight-month deployment of the ship in Singapore, where it arrived last week, will go as planned.

The official has revealed that such cyber security inspections are crucial for the Navy, which heavily depends on communications and satellite networks.

Representatives of Lockheed Martin, the company that built USS Freedom, say they’re working with the US Navy to make sure that the lead vessel’s networks are properly secured.

By deploying USS Freedom in Singapore, the company hopes to stimulate Asian demand for such vessels.
