Kaspersky experts warn users about a series of cleverly-designed websites that leverage the upcoming 2014 FIFA World Cup in an effort to spread malware and steal credit card information.

Such scams are expected to surface all over the world, but since the event will take place in Brazil, Brazilian cybercriminals have already started launching their malicious campaigns.

Several new domains that include the words “copa” (cup), or “Promoção” (giveaway) have been registered over the past days in an attempt to lure internauts.

Some of the websites set up by the cybercriminals ask victims to hand over their credit card information and their CPFs (the equivalent of social security numbers) if they want to participate in the bogus promotions. Other sites simply push banking Trojans.

Besides sites that rely on the 2014 FIFA World Cup, crooks have also set up fake domains that advertise tickets for the Confederation Cup, an event that will take place this year in Brazil.
