Bogus links to pirated movies lead to shady websites

Cybercriminals are posting links that appear to point to pirated movies on the Internet Archive. These links have been found to lead to malware and other types of scams.

According to TorrentFreak, the cybercrooks are trying to lure potential victims with titles such as The Hangover, World War Z, and The World’s End. However, no one actually gets to see the movies. Instead, the scammers try to trick users into downloading all sorts of software, or register for certain services to gain access to the content.

In one scenario, victims are asked to install an application called MKPlayer. In other cases, they’re taken to third-party streaming sites that ask for credit card details. The ultimate goal of the scammers is to make some money.

As TorrentFreak highlights, a lot of users might end up on these scam websites now that the Internet Archive added torrent downloads, and the site is indexed by torrent search engines.

For the time being, the Internet Archive hasn’t found an efficient way to keep cybercrooks out, so users are advised to be cautious.
