Google has made another important step towards penetrating the mobile telephony market, by launching a new search service that supplies links only towards Websites that are specially formatted in order to be accessed from GSM terminals.

The service, based on the XHTML technology, allows the users that own a mobile phone fitted with an Internet browser to access Google.com, from which the search takes place normally, by inserting a certain search criterion.

However, Google also offers other options specially designed for cell phones, as for example "Web", for searching on the entire Google Web index, "Images", in order to search pictures or "Local," in order to access the Google directory containing business data regarding the local merchants.

Moreover, Google has also launched a SMS service, which allows the users to access the index by means of the text technology, by sending the search query to Google's SMS code, namely 46645. Google SMS offers updated information on the listing of different local companies, theaters' schedules, weather conditions and even the prices of different products.

The new services from Google are free of charge, but the users will have to pay the Internet access fee charged by the mobile telephony companies.
