With a free third-party application

There are lots of notification messages, shortcuts or icons that you don't want to appear on your HTC device display. But then again, there are also lots of the above that you need and can't get quick access to. Well, there is a small third-party application that can help you enable some of these needed shortcuts and functions, just the way you want to.

HTCustom is a free application that can easily tweak and customize Windows Mobile 5/6 devices. Basically, the application is a reg editing tool, mainly created for HTC devices. Unfortunately, not all HTC smartphones are supported, so if you get an exception error it means that your handset is not supported yet.

The application can make multiple changes ranging from 'cosmetic' to more system related ones, such as connectivity or Internet changes. Before I start describing these options I have to say that the freeware application is very intuitive and user-friendly. Still, I suggest you do not change an option if you don't know what it does. It won't damage your device, but you might hide some options that you need and not be able to revert them.

The Home screen of your device can be customized in detail, starting with date and time. You can choose to display only one of these (clock) or both (clock and date). You can also choose the format your time will be displayed in. The battery and communications icons can be removed if you want more space for your wallpaper.

Personally, I don't think it's a good idea to remove the battery icon, as you won't be able to see how much energy you are left with. There's also an option that can disable or enable the time zones. There scroll bars, as well as the scroll arrows can be shortened and made to look much slimmer. This will provide you with more space on the screen, especially useful when browsing the Internet.

There's also an option that can make use of an advanced search feature via Google. For the advanced users there's also the option to tweak the cache settings. Thus they'll be able to modify the glyph cache, system cache and system filter cache. If your device is 3G compatible and you can make video-calls, you can also configure the 3G video dialer.

SMS notifications that appear on the screen after sending a message can be disabled, if you think they're annoying. You can also disable or enable the support for DTMF, as well as a wide range of security warnings. Other changes will help you improve A2DP sound, disable animation menu, choose a different language keypad layout, enable/disable HSDPA or change the Bluetooth name.

These are only a few tweaks that HTCustom can do, but I'll let you enjoy the rest. Feel free to comment on the application, if you find it interesting.
