It seems that G1 mobile phone users will finally have a reason to rejoice next month, as the long-expected Cupcake update for the Google Android operating system is now stated to come to them as soon as May. And this time around it's not just another rumor about a possible release date for the firmware update, but the launch has been posted on T-Mobile Germany's website, so it's officially confirmed in a way.

As many of you might know by now, Google already made available the SDK for the update last week, namely the Android 1.5 SDK, while also announcing that the Cupcake would become available for Android users in the next few months. Now, it seems that the announcement has been reinforced, at least for G1 users in Germany, though we have high hopes that it will come to other countries as well.

We have already covered a lot of the new features and improvements the Android 1.5 is expected to bring along, compared with the previously available iteration of the operating system, yet some of them are still worth mentioning again, as users have been long waiting for them.

One of the most important features is an additional on-screen keyboard, allowing them to input text both via the physical QWERTY keypad available with the device, and through the virtual one that will be displayed on the screen. In addition, the update will also include video-recording capabilities, as well as a video-playback functionality.

Other features of the update include the stereo Bluetooth support, some new integration with Picasa and YouTube, the automatic adjustment of the touch-screen when the G1 is held horizontally or vertically, as well as a wide range of other capabilities, fixes and improvements. For what it's worth, the Cupcake update is meant to provide users with a brand new mobile experience, while also extending the functionality of their device. Stay tuned to learn when it surfaces and how it can be installed.
