A developer working at Crytek says that the pure processing power of the Xbox One was the main reason that the team managed to deliver the impressive graphical quality of its new Ryse: Son of Rome.

P.J. Estevez, a design director, is quoted by VG247 as saying that, “The NPCs in the game all have cloth, facial expressions, and the same fidelity as a character in the cinematics. We were able to give the AI characters the same detail as the player characters, and they express a lot more emotion than is seen in other games.”

He adds, “The Xbox One gave us AI that really feels just human enough. You can see pain as you slice at a guy, or you see surprise. It’s always hard work, but the Xbox One let us give the game more emotion as we took Ryse forward.”

Initially, the game, which focuses on the battles of a Roman legionary against a wide array of enemies, was being created for the Xbox 360 and its scope was more limited.

But the team decided to move to the next Microsoft console when it saw the first prototypes and saw the kind of possibilities that it opened up.

Estevez says that it took the Crytek studio just one week to get the game running on the Xbox One in crude form and they were quickly impressed with the potential quality of the future experience.

The developer also praised Microsoft for allowing the development studio to work closely with the team creating the console itself.

Ryse: Son of Rome is a launch game for the Xbox One and is currently on sale in thirteen countries.

The title has not received a lot of praise from critics, who seem to be disappointed with its limited story and the rather repetitive combat mechanics.
