Ryse: Son of Rome has gone through a long development process and it seems that the team working on the title at Crytek is thinking about a long-term future for the series, which at the moment is exclusive to the Xbox One home console.

Cevat Yerli, the leader of the studio, tells Polygon that, “The title’s not supposed to be a one-off.”

It’s not clear whether the CEO is talking about a sequel that’s already in the planning stages or if there are titles connected to Ryse that Crytek might introduce at a later date.

When asked about the long development process for the game, which has been rumored since early last year, the executive says that the official announcement is a good moment for Crytek to evaluate the product and its level of quality.

He adds, “It’s going to be a challenge until it’s in the shops. … When at times certain things didn’t happen as I wanted them to happen, I never thought, ‘OK, let’s put it in stop.’ But I had my doubts that we could pull it off in the kind of quality I’m looking at.”

I managed to spend some hands-on time with Ryse: Son of Rome during E3 2013.

The game puts the player in the combat leather boots of a Roman general who needs to battle the enemies of the Republic one on one while also leading legions in tactical assaults.

The biggest problem with the experience at the moment is an over-reliance on Quick Time Events, which makes the game feel cinematic but eliminates some control and fun from the player.

Crytek has stated that the sequences can be very rewarding for players as long as they take the time to master them.

Ryse: Son of Rome will be out on the Xbox One before the end of the year.
