The CrossOver (Great American Lame Duck Challenge) giveaway is now officially over, CodeWeavers says. No more serial numbers will be generated. Still, those who got their chance to sign up for one will be receiving theirs via e-mail over the next few days. Read on to see how the giveaway affected CodeWeavers.

“The Lame Duck Challenge is now complete,” CodeWeavers says. “We will be emailing those of you who signed up for serial numbers in the next few days. We have extended the period where you can register the serial number until November 30th, 2008. So don't rush to register the serial number, you have plenty of time. Again, we apologize for the downtime of the website. It has been an interesting day, and we Thank You in advance for your patience,” reads a company post.

CodeWeavers launched the Great American Lame Duck Presidential Challenge in July, attempting to get President Bush to accomplish a major economic or political goal by January 20, 2009. For its part, CodeWeavers would offer its software for free for one day. President Bush was supposed to make specific positive accomplishments in areas such as the economy, home values, the stock market, the war on terror and other key issues. One goal in particular called for the President to help bring average gasoline prices in the Twin Cities to $2.79 a gallon. This happened on Monday, October 14, prompting CodeWeavers to make good on its promise, and start offering CrossOver for free to anyone interested in acquiring it.

Users were required to complete a small form, and then confirm a serial code received via e-mail over at the register page. The last step users had to follow in order to unlock a copy of CrossOver was to log into their account on CodeWeavers' website. You can still do this now, provided that you signed up for a serial code. Whenever you receive it, just head over to this page, code in hand.

Below you have the folks at CodeWeavers on tape, revealing their state of mind following the downtime. Admittedly, the CodeWeavers guys say they had no idea demand would be so high. Although they had considered a backup plan earlier, they never came to putting it into practice until it was too late. Some laughs are guaranteed. Enjoy!
