CrossOver Mac permits the installation of Windows software on Mac OS X without requiring a virtual machine and/or a copy of Microsoft Windows. Using Wine, it allows Unix-like computer operating systems to execute programs written for Microsoft Windows.

Users will agree that CrossOver is one of the most important additions to their Applications folders as it allows not only to seamlessly run supported Windows apps, but also surprises you by running even non-supported software to the extent it is fairly usable. According to the release notes for CrossOver 8.0.3, CodeWeavers has been busy resolving a number of issues with Internet Explorer 6 and 7 support, as well as some minor Snow Leopard issues. The update should also improve sound on the Mac, as the changelog indicates.

The last time CrossOver Mac saw a maintenance update was in September, 2009, when CodeWeavers issued version 8.0.1, adding new application support (Quicken 2009, Internet Explorer 7, Photoshop CS2) and a slew of application fixes, to name a few of the major changes.

CrossOver Games has been recently updated as well. Just like CrossOver Mac, it permits the installation of Windows-specific software, but particularly focusing on providing compatibility with Windows games. Update 8.1.4 for CrossOver Games, issued on December 29, fixes yet another Left 4 Dead 2 issue, and fixes Guild Wars with certain ATI chipsets, to name a few changes.

In October 2008, CodeWeavers launched the Great American Lame Duck Presidential Challenge in July, attempting to get President Bush to accomplish a major economic or political goal by January 20, 2009. For its part, CodeWeavers would offer its software for free for one day. President Bush was supposed to make specific positive accomplishments in areas such as the economy, home values, the stock market, the war on terror and other key issues. One goal in particular called for the President to help bring average gasoline prices in the Twin Cities to $2.79 a gallon. This happened on Monday, October 14, prompting CodeWeavers to make good on its promise, and start offering CrossOver for free to anyone interested in acquiring it.
