It's uncertain where the data breach has occurred

At least 300 people who attended a couple of meetings at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center earlier this year reported that their credit card information was stolen and abused to make fraudulent purchases.

According to the Boston Globe, the victims are among the 13,000 who took part in an American Public Health Association convention in early November, and among 8,000 American Society of Human Genetics conference attendees.

The stolen information has been used to make purchases all around the country. The fraudsters have bought gift cards, clothing and other items. In one case, the crooks tried to make a $100,000 (€75,000) purchase.

What’s interesting about these incidents is that no one knows where the breach actually occurred. The exhibition center, the Westin Boston Waterfront Hotel that is connected to it, a restaurant and a bar where many of the victims had ordered food and drinks have all denied suffering a data breach.

Boston and State Police, and the Secret Service are investigating.
