Corinex has just announced its Corinex GameNet powerline adapter, a device that lets gamers create an encrypted Ethernet connection using the house power outlets. The Ethernet-over-Powerlines adapter can deliver data transfer rates of up to 200MBps, but, in order to work it has to be carefully positioned.

Although the device is suitable for sharing any type of Ethernet connection and it also works with notebooks and desktop PCs, it is primarily targeted at gamers, as it fixes most of the shortcomings encountered by console users.

For instance, many console users are positioned in a room that features no Ethernet outlet, such as living-rooms. Moreover, since the vast majority of popular game consoles come without a wireless connection, cables are always required to connect to the web.

Paired with the right devices, the home AC grid can deliver superior quality as compared to an Ethernet home network and delivers faster response times with lower latencies that are closely similar to Wi-Fi.

"GameNet provides gamers with unrivaled Internet gaming performance and convenience", said Brian Donnelly, Corinex's Vice President of Marketing. "The Internet connectivity supplied through GameNet is four times faster than Wireless, available in every room of the house and eliminates gamers' biggest enemy: 'lag'. In three easy steps, anyone can begin online console gaming faster than they've ever experienced. Whether playing with a friend next door or gamers on the other side of the world, the connection is flawless and real-time", he continued.

However, in order to get the promised throughput, users have to place one of the powerline adapters as close to the main Ethernet cable as possible, preferably on the first outlet where the cable enters the house. More than that, the specific outlet must be chosen with extra care, so it does not feature a ground connector. Although such outlets are dangerous for consumer electronics appliances such as freezers and washing machines, they would also strip off any electrical interference with the ground.

The Corinex GameNet Ethernet-over-Powerlines set comes with two powerline adapters and sells for as much as $140.
