Customers currently leveraging or preparing to deploy the most recent releases of System Center Virtual Machine Manager can take advantage of a free tool from Microsoft to help them analyze their hardware infrastructure and software assets and optimize them for VMM.

Available on the Microsoft Download Center, Configuration Analyzer is tailored to System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2 SP1, but also to older releases of VMM such as 2008 and 2008 R2.

“Virtual Machine Manager 2008, 2008 R2, and 2008 R2 SP1 Configuration Analyzer (VMMCA) is a diagnostic tool that you can use to evaluate important configuration settings for computers that either are serving or might serve VMM roles or other VMM functions,” the software giant stated.

According to the Redmond company, VMMCA can be used both before the VMM deployment, and after.

Obviously, depending on the state of the VMM server, the tool serves different purposes. Either way however, Configuration Analyzer is set up to evaluate configuration settings in relation to VMM.

In this regard, customers can assess their infrastructure for scenarios in which they’re gearing up to deploy Virtual Machine Manager. Roles such as VMM server, VMM Administrator Console and VMM Self-Service Portal are covered by the tool’s evaluation functionality.

Of course, once VMM is in place, customers can once again turn to VMMCA. This time around, the evaluation is focused on the existing configuration covering such functions as: Windows Server–based host, VMWare Virtual Center Server, P2V source computer and Operations Manager agent.

“The VMMCA scans the hardware and software configurations of the computers you specify, evaluates them against a set of predefined rules, and then provides you with error messages and warnings for any configurations that are not optimal for the VMM role or other VMM function that you have specified for the computer,” the Redmond company said.
