It is only a reference design for the time being, but might become a commercial product

Windows Phone enthusiasts out there interested in the purchase of a very large smartphone running under Microsoft’s mobile operating system might be in luck, as one such handset was showcased at Computex yesterday.

The phone is called Wistron Tiger and sports an impressive 6.45-inch touchscreen display capable of delivering a full HD (1080 x 1920 pixels) resolution.

Moreover, it comes with a quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor inside, which means that it is also capable of offering great performance capabilities. You can admire the device in the video embedded below, available courtesy of mobilegeeks.de.

The Wistron Tiger Windows Phone was designed with an aluminum body and lacks navigation buttons. Moreover, it does not sport a dedicated camera button either.

However, as WMPoweruser notes, the mobile phone appears to feature dual front-facing speakers, which will certainly translate into a great audio experience. Wistron Tiger also has a very thin design, it seems.

The bad news about the handset, however, is the fact that it is only a reference design for the time being, which means that a phone maker will have to pick it up and build it as a commercial product in order for users to enjoy its capabilities.

Should that happen, we’re pretty sure that the phone will appeal to a lot of users, since there is a growing market for smartphones that sport large touchscreen displays.

Up until recently, that market segment was exclusive to Android handsets, but Windows Phone devices with large screens have already started to emerge.

We’re referring here to the Nokia Lumia 1520 and Lumia 1320, both of which were unveiled in the fourth quarter of the last year with 6-inch touchscreen displays.

Android continues to dominate the area, especially now that Samsung has unveiled the 7-inch Galaxy W smartphone, but Windows Phone appears set to grab some share in this segment as well.

With its 6.45-inch screen, the Wistron Tiger Windows Phone becomes the second largest smartphone in the world, followed closely by Sony Xperia Z Ultra and ZTE Nubia X6, both of which have 6.44-inch displays.

What remains to be seen, however, is whether the phone will indeed be built for commercial use, and which manufacturer out there will make such a move.

Lately, Windows Phone has managed to attract a lot of users to its side, mainly courtesy of the appealing handsets that it powers, and the release of such a large smartphone will certainly help it appeal to more people.
