The company CEO said they won't be in the realm of PCs, phones or tablets

We suppose it was a long time coming. With AMD becoming NVIDIA's rival after buying ATI, and essentially outdoing it because it simply has a wider variety of products on sale, NVIDIA is thinking of branching out too.

At this point, however, it is impossible to say what branches NVIDIA will grow or graft.

We do know which ones I won't bother with though.

“We will not build things that the market already has, such as smartphones, PCs and tablets,” said company CEO Jen-Hsun Huang when speaking to The Wall Street Journal.

NVIDIA will scout companies and technologies that “fit into its business” which, I suppose, means extra resources in mobile graphics, client PCs, workstations and servers.

Then again, even if it does plan to make no phones/tablets of its own, NVIDIA may be interested in new technologies suitable to ARM SoCs. After all, it did buy Icera a while back (maker of software modems for smartphones and tablets).
