Microsoft is cooking a second Community Technology Preview of Windows Embedded Standard 2011. According to the Redmond company, early adopters should be looking for the CTP2 bits of the next iteration of Windows Embedded to be offered in the coming month. Ahead of deciding on a specific brand for the future version of Windows Embedded Standard, Microsoft was referring to the operating system as Windows Embedded Standard codename “Quebec.”

“We are thrilled at the fantastic response we have had with the Windows Embedded Standard 2011 CTP,” the Redmond company revealed in an email sent out to Beta testers. “Our development team has been hard at work incorporating much of the feedback we have received from you, and you can expect our second public CTP build to be available within the next month!”

Customers familiar with the evolution of the Windows Embedded product already know that Microsoft has based the 2011 version of Windows 7. The previous release, Windows Embedded Standard 2009 was based on Windows XP, and the software giant is skipping Vista when it comes down to delivering its successor. In this context, Windows Embedded Standard 2011 is nothing more than the componentized version of Windows 7, which of course contains Embedded-specific features.

“The second Standard 2011 Community Technology Preview (CTP2) will include many updates and bug fixes as well as some new features. A few to highlight are: Footprint optimization for key scenarios; New and updated templates in ICE including import and export of templates; More intuitive package naming; Static Dependency Analyzer (SDA),” Microsoft added.

In addition, Windows Embedded Standard 2011 CTP2 will come with multiple new packages for testers, including: anti-malware, DVD Maker, Parental Control, Backup/Restore, IMAPI, PhotoViewer, and Fax and Scan. Just as it was the case for CTP1, the CTP2 build will be offered to participants in the Technical Preview program via Microsoft Connect.
