Comedian Robert Schimmel passed away in Phoenix hospital from injuries sustained in a car accident that occurred on August 26. He was 60 years old.

Schimmel, known for his outrageous, x-rated sense of humor, was involved in a severe car crash at the end of last month, when the car he was in, driven by his daughter, was run off the road.

The star’s daughter is in stable condition while his son, who was also in the vehicle at the time of the accident, walked away injured, AceShowbiz informs.

“Comedian Robert Schimmel died in a Phoenix hospital on Friday night, September 3 after fatally injured in a car accident, his public relations firm confirmed on Saturday, as ABC News reported,” the e-zine writes.

“Schimmel was a passenger in his 19-year-old daughter’s car when the vehicle swerved to avoid another accident on a Phoenix highway,” AceShowbiz says of the accident.

“His daughter was hospitalized but is expected to recover, while Schimmel’s 11-year-old son, who was also in the car, was uninjured,” the e-zine goes on to say.

Robert Schimmel was most famous for his contributions on Howard Stern’s radio show, but also for his HBO shows, most of which would use experiences from his own life to get audiences laughing.

Schimmel even used his cancer and the death of his son as material for sketches, because he believed laughter can get people through the worst in life, such was the case with his cancer diagnosis.

At the beginning of the year, the comedian announced he’d been diagnosed with cirrhosis and was making the arrangements to have himself on the waiting list for a liver transplant.

Fans will remember him for his irreverent humor and the way he had of finding something to laugh at in every aspect of his life.

Lee Kernis of Brillstein Entertainment Partners once said for the The New York Times that Schimmel always started by poking fun at his own life.

“Robert was always the butt of his own joke. When he would talk about the failings of his marriages, his relationships or having kids, he always made the joke about his inability to ever win at the end,” Kernis said.

Fellow comedians are already paying their respects to Schimmel, with Jimmy Kimmel and Sarah Silverman taking to their Twitter page to mourn the passing of a great comedian.
