And its success

The Aliens franchise has enjoyed a revival in later years, with two videogames based on it now in definite development and with another title, an Aliens team-based role playing title that was set to be created by Obsidian declared dead by the people working on it. And with SEGA controlling the release of both, it will be interesting to see how it handles launching them and fans and critics’ expectations.

Up first is Aliens vs. Predator from Rebellion, which is set to arrive in early 2010. The game is envisioned as being a clear cut follow up to the two games released almost ten years ago, allowing the player to inhabit a Marine, an Alien or a Predator while attempting to take down the other two races. The areas should be more varied, with outdoor environments being introduced for the first time, the freedom of the various characters being increased.

But where does this leave Aliens: Colonial Marines, which is being worked on by Gearbox, and which has apparently received limited attention lately? Mike Hayes, who is the president and the Chief Operations Officer at publisher SEGA, is saying that Colonial Marines depends heavily on the performance of Aliens vs. Predator.

He told G4 that “It's unlikely that we'd launch anything within six months, but probably nine months, eight to 12 months possibly. Though we literally are looking at that at the moment and a lot is going to depend, as well, on how successful AvP is at the box.”

Apparently, SEGA is even interested in creating a third parallel Aliens-inspired title, although it's not clear what that would be, considering that a RPG title proved not to have the quality to integrate in the series. Maybe a family-friendly Aliens Kart, with poison and chainguns instead of blue shells?
