Microsoft has released to manufacturing and the general availability the other codename Mojave, namely Commerce Server 2009 (the Redmond company also used the moniker to pimp its Windows Vista operating system in an effort to demonstrate that the perceptions related to the operating system were false). However, Commerce Server 2009 is not connected with Vista in the least. Instead, Commerce Server 2009 is nothing more than an e-commerce platform for business customers, designed to deliver the evolution of e-commerce channel user experiences, according to the software giant.

“Commerce Server 2009 is the first major product release under the August 2007 joint development partnership agreement between Cactus Commerce and Microsoft Corp. This partnership includes collaboration on product engineering, partner ecosystem development, marketing, pre-sales, services and support of Microsoft Commerce Server,” revealed Lynnette McL, Commerce Server 2009 PM.

Microsoft used its MIX09 conference in order to bring Commerce Server 2009 into the limelight. At the event, the Redmond company plans to showcase the platform in combination with rich application (RIA) technologies in order to demonstrate how e-commerce channels can stretch across the web and mobile devices. In the first week of March 2009, the RTM bits of Commerce Server 2009 were made available for download to MSDN subscribers.

“Commerce Server 2009 delivers the ability to increase your business reach by making it possible to sell via multiple channels by using an out-of-the-box shopping site, SharePoint Commerce Services, and the Multi-Channel Commerce Foundation. The new out-of-the-box shopping site leverages SharePoint Commerce Services, which provides a gallery of ASP.NET 3.5 Web parts and controls, a comprehensive e-commerce shopping feature-set, and technology integration between Commerce Server and SharePoint technologies. The Multi-Channel Commerce Foundation provides a new unified, extensible run-time programming model for Commerce Server, including new run-time e-commerce capabilities,” Lynnette McL added.
