While visiting Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia, US Secretary of State John Kerry took the time to remind folks present at a meeting at a local American cultural center about the urgency to curb global greenhouse gas emissions.

The Secretary of State explained that reducing pollution is something that needs to be done in order to put a leash on climate change, which he labeled a “weapon of mass destruction.”

In case anyone was wondering, John Kerry was not talking metaphorically.

On the contrary, he was referring to the fact that climate change and global warming foster ocean acidification, rising sea levels, and extreme weather events, all of which are a threat to human communities worldwide.

The US Secretary of State also felt the need to pick a bone with climate change deniers, and said that such people can and should be referred to as members of a so-called Flat Earth Society.

“We simply don’t have time to let a few loud interest groups hijack the climate conversation,” he stressed, as cited by Eco Watch.

Not at all surprisingly, John Kerry's observations were welcomed by folks attending the meeting at the American cultural center.

Of these people, Philippines Climate Commissioner Yeb Sano argued that, “Secretary John Kerry’s message is the kind of tone we want to hear from the U.S. and from every world leader.”
