2K Games, as the publisher, and Firaxis, as the developers, have announced that gamers who are interested in Civilization V will have the options, starting with September 21, of getting a Special Edition of the turn based strategy title. The new package will cost 99.99 dollars and will have a lot of extra series related content. The new package will exist alongside the normal physical version, the Collector's Edition that can be picked up using the digital distribution service Steam and a normal edition which is also downloadable.

Long time fans of the series can look forward to getting quite a bit of goodies as part of the newly announced Special Edition of Civilization V. The package contains: a 176 hardcover art book showing off how artists created the unique designs for the video game; a DVD, called “Behind the Scenes at Firaxis on Civilization V” showing how the team created the new title; a 2 disk soundtrack which offers tracks that can be heard in the game and 5 full metal figurines, made by Reaper Miniatures, that will show off the most interesting units that can be recruited in Civilization V. Players will, of course, also get a physical copy of the game.

Civilization V will shake up the foundations of the turn based strategy series. The familiar squares where production, combat and commerce took place are replaced by hexes. The six side figure allows for more tactical freedom when it comes to the combat section, especially when paired with a new rule which only allows one military units to occupy a hex. Ranged attacks are introduced and the whole military aspect will be deeper than in Civilization IV. The diplomatic and the civics aspects of the strategy game have also suffered changes, with neutral city states offering long terms advances and political choices evolving as history progresses.
