Civilization IV: Colonization for Mac OS X is now available as a digital download, Aspyr Media has announced. Available exclusively from Aspyr's GameAgent store, Colonization is the fifth installment in the Civlization IV franchise. Aspyr also reveals that the company has opened up preorders for upcoming downloadable versions of the game’s two expansion packs: Warlords and Beyond the Sword, and Civilization III: Complete.

Aspyr Media, the renowned Mac-game publisher making headlines last year for reportedly firing half of its staff, announced in early January that Sid Meier’s Civilization IV: Colonization had shipped for Mac OS X. The title, developed by Firaxis Games, challenges players to lead one of four European nations on a quest to colonize the New World. Colonization does not require the original Civilization IV game to play.

Those interested in downloading the title via Aspyr’s GameAgent are urged to check with the system requirements before purchasing. For stability reasons, it is also recommended that interested parties use Mozilla’s Firefox web browser when downloading files from Aspyr.

Minimum system requirements for Civilization IV: Colonization include Mac OS X 10.5.4, a PowerPC G5 or Intel chipset (1.8 GHz), 512MB of memory, 3.5GB of free disk space, a 64MB or higher graphics card, an Internet connection for multiplayer games, and a DVD Drive. The game is not supported on volumes formatted as Mac OS Extended (Case Sensitive), according to Aspyr.

Gamers also need to note that Civilization is a large game, therefore downloading takes quite a while. It is important that one does not interrupt a download, while pausing and resuming the download may cause it to be incomplete, resulting in a corrupt file. “We recommend downloading at a time when the download can run uninterrupted with a minimum of processes running on the machine,” Aspyr’s final note to customers goes.
