The acclaimed city building game became publisher Paradox Interactive's most successful title at launch ever

Cities: Skylines has just become the best-selling video game in publisher Paradox Interactive's catalogue.

Developer Colossal Order set out to create a solid city building simulation experience, and judging by the game's success, it managed to do a splendid job.

Sure, the game has its fair share of shortcomings, but it's hard to please everyone, especially when the latest entry in the biggest ever city buildings franchise, 2013's SimCity, ended up such a disappointment for everyone, in spite of it being such a high profile project.

The truth is that it's hard to make a good game in the genre, due to the complex nature of the underpinning mechanics and systems, which have to work together seamlessly in order for the product to be able to stand on its feet.

The game's success speaks for its quality, as do the over 5,000 community-built items that can be found on the game's Steam Workshop page.

The game offers a huge map that players can build on, and a wealth of in-depth simulation features, coming together to provide a great experience for those looking to create their very own metropolis.

A great success for Paradox and Colossal Order

Paradox Interactive has revealed that Cities: Skylines sold over 250,000 copies, including pre-orders, in its 24 hours on sale alone, making it the best-selling entry in the publisher's catalogue, at launch.

Understandably, this put a pretty wide grin on Paradox Chief Executive Officer Fredrik Wester, who shared a few kind words on the Paradox Plaza forums:

"We would like to offer our deepest and heartfelt thanks to the community for their passionate support and to let them know that we are committed to supporting this wonderful game for years to come, in the same way that we have for our Crusader Kings and Europa Universalis communities."

"We knew that we had a great game on our hands and so to be able to continue to provide fans of the game with a multitude of new content for it going forward is fantastic."
