For many computer users from all over the world, the external design of just about any piece of IT-related gear they purchase is an extremely important element when making a final purchase decision, and that's probably the reason why Cisco has decided to deliver its new Linksys E4200 Dual-Band router in quite an attractive casing. However, the E-4200 is a lot more than a pretty face, supporting quite a large number of advanced routing functions, including the extensive support for all of today's home multimedia products, such as Internet TVs, iPad tablets, game consoles, smart phones, e-readers, and VoIP devices.

The device is able to deliver speeds of up to 450 Mbps and also sports simultaneous dual-band wireless-N and a combination of internal and external amplifiers coupled with six antennas (3x3 configuration) that help increase the signal strength across greater distances.

The E-4200 also sports a new USB feature that makes it easy to add external storage to the network, the built-in UPnP Media server functionality enabling users to easily share files across their entire home network.

Moreover, the router comes equipped with advanced security features, including WPA and WPA2 and Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) Firewall, while also promising users IPv6 support via a software update scheduled for later on in 2011.

"Cisco’s Linksys line continues to lead the industry with innovative technology for the growing number of wireless-enabled homes," said Simon Fleming-Wood, vice president of marketing, Cisco Consumer Products.

"The new Linksys E4200 router is ideal for home entertainment enthusiasts who want to equip their homes with the latest wireless technology or anyone who wants the reassurance of outfitting their home with the best router on the market today," Mr. Fleming-Wood added.

The Linksys E4200 Maximum Performance Dual-Band Wireless-N Router is immediately available for an MSRP of $179.99, which is by no means a small price, but it's most likely worth it, given the features the new piece of networking equipment from Cisco has in store.
