Wireless technology is starting to attract the big names from the traditional wired networking segment and while this may not be the best thing, it is certainly one of the facts. As the big companies are focusing their attention on the new technology, the smaller start-up outfit may get squashed or get assimilated as may very well be the case with a wireless technology promoting company that Cisco Systems, the BIG name of networking solutions may soon take as a prize.

There are a number of rumors circulating that Cisco Systems is going to make a step and try to gain at least a portion of the increasing wireless networking market and according to the news site computerworld a spokesperson from the company referred to the online Cisco paper that says that while the wireless technology is very important, the biggest name in networking equipment has no plans of developing such hardware components right now.

"WiMax will be one of several high-speed wireless WAN technologies seeing broad deployment," says the Cisco Systems note and it also adds that, "Cisco has no current plans to build WiMax base stations or base stations using any other WAN radio access technology."

While Cisco Systems is now working with a number of partners in designing and manufacturing the next generation base solutions that feature IP technology from Cisco and radio components from its partners, and the big company did not get any closer to the wireless technology than that, two industry sources are telling that an important purchase could be closed in the following weeks and the marked company is one from this list: Alvarion Ltd., Aperto Networks Inc., Navini Networks Inc. and Redline Communications Inc.

While Cisco Systems may declare that it is not interested in the wireless technology that is making such big waves now, it nonetheless announced its plans to acquire Cognio Inc in order to gain access to the small company's wireless network management technology. So, despite everything the big manufacturer says, steps were already taken in order to enter the wireless market segment.
